The School of Education Internship Program
Union Graduate College offers New York State’s only year-long internship for aspiring secondary school teachers. Each teaching student is matched with a secondary-school mentor teacher. We know each one of our students and mentors well, and we involve them in deciding the student-mentor match. The result is a mutually beneficial relationship in which the mentor and student ultimately become colleagues. The internship allows teaching students to connect educational theory with educational practice.
Our secondary school partners tell us that Union School of Education grads are a step above the rest, in part due to their extensive internship experience. Our graduates are fully prepared to take the lead in the classroom at graduation!
Most MAT students complete a yearlong, half-day internship in a secondary school setting, team-teaching two classes with a mentor teacher. The internship is required and counts as 3 course units in the Master of Arts in Teaching degree program. The internship serves as a laboratory for EDS 550A, B, and C. Students are expected to interview at the site(s) where they hope to intern.
Entrance into the internship portion of the program is contingent upon completion of the Psychology of Teaching, the appropriate Curriculum and Methods course, and the Introduction to Literacy Course with minimum grades of “B”.
