Our MAT Requires a Year-long Internship

When it comes to preparing teachers, there’s no substitute for experience.

Union Graduate College offers New York State’s only year-long, mentored internship for aspiring secondary school teachers. There are singular advantages to this program:

Unparalleled classroom experience. For an entire school year, our students spend a half day in a secondary school classroom, teaching side by side with a mentor teacher. That gives Union Graduate College students twice the experience of graduates from most MAT programs. Our students know exactly what’s required to take a class from September through June. They are familiar with the cadence of the school year, from the excitement of the first day through the pressure of final exams. Come graduation, our students are equipped with the experience, skills, and confidence to lead their own classrooms.

A highly compatible student-mentor match. Each MAT student is matched with a secondary-school mentor teacher. Because ours is a small, personalized program, we know each of our students and mentors well, and we involve them in deciding the student-mentor match. The result is a mutually beneficial relationship in which mentor and student ultimately become colleagues.

A schedule that coincides with the job market. Our full-time MAT program runs from June through June, so our graduates are ready—and available—for teacher jobs that open in September. That gives our graduates an edge over those whose programs end mid-year, when there are fewer vacancies for full-time teachers.

An excellent teacher placement record. Our placement rate is among the highest in New York State. Secondary school administrators tell us that, because of the reputation of the Union Graduate College program, they routinely turn to us first to fill vacancies.

Requirements and Prerequisites
The internship is required and counts as 3 course units in the The internship serves as a laboratory for EDS 550A, B, and C connecting theory and practice parallel to a future doctor doing rounds in a teaching hospital. Students are expected to interview at the site(s) where they hope to intern.

Entrance into the internship portion of the program is contingent upon completion of the intensive summer program that includes the Psychology of Teaching, the appropriate Curriculum and Methods course, and the Introduction to Literacy Course with minimum grades of “B.”

A Note about Flexibility
Although our MAT program is designed primarily as a one-year program for full-time students, it can be completed on a part-time basis. Students interested in this option complete the program in two years or, in some cases, more. During the first part-time year, students take graduate academic course work. During the second year, they spend a half day as an intern in a middle school or high school classroom for one academic year while completing their pedagogy course work.
