There are two possible combined programs.
Union College students with a GPA above 3.25 are eligible for this joint undergraduate/graduate
program.
A student may begin the combined degree program in the senior year if the student meets the prerequisite entering the intensive 8-week summer program.
For students in this program two of their upper division undergraduate courses count for both undergraduate and graduate credit.
Union College students with a GPA in the 3.0-3.24 range are eligible for this
joint undergraduate/graduate program.
All students in a combined program must complete the requirements below:
The graduate eight-week summer term courses are:
- EDS 540 (Psychology of Teaching),
- EDS 540L (Psychology of Teaching Lab),
- (EDS 511-516) EDS 541 (Essential Reading for Secondary Teachers),
- Curriculum and Methods course
In the fall, a student completes a two-week field observation, EDS 500C and
takes EDS 550A, concurrently with the yearlong teaching internship. In the winter,
a student completes a seminar on assessment (EDS 550B), the internship, and
a course in the field of certification. In the spring, a student completes a
school reform seminar (EDS 550C) and the internship.
In addition to the education courses required for certification, combined degree
students must enroll in either a two-term thesis in the discipline (plus one
additional elective) or a one-term master’s degree project (plus two additional
electives). They must also complete a literacy course on writing in the discipline
(EDS 544).
The program is usually completed in one calendar year after the student graduates from Union College with a B.A. or B.S. degree.
Application materials must be submitted no later than March 1 of your senior
year if a student wishes to begin the program in the summer. Please see a program
adviser before registering.
