President’s Message

Thanks to Ross Marvin and Natalia Kutzer we will be having our first TGIT of the term this Thursday on February 11th at the Van Dyke. It will be a trivia night to help benefit Haiti. Meetings with Dr. Schweitzer

Our President would like to meet with you and has set aside an hour every other week during the term for these meetings! These meetings are important to her and help inform her about people she needs to recognize and thank for their assistance to you in your education and about any issues that you might be experiencing.

Participants in the open forum do not need to be registered or make an appointment, and are encouraged by President Schweitzer to come and go as they please. Consider attending and sharing your thoughts with her. It is unusual for college presidents to set aside time for student meetings. Take advantage of this opportunity!

In order to receive this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

·         Full-Time or Part-Time General or Health MBA Student

·         Matriculated

·         Taking Spring term courses

Yaron Deskalo is a 2007 graduate of the Albany Law School and Union Graduate College JD/MBA joint degree program. He currently works as a producer for ESPN’s hit show “E:60” and is based in West Hartford, Connecticut, though his position includes a significant amount of travel.  Last year, Yaron established a scholarship for an MBA student that will cover the tuition of 1 course. He has graciously agreed to offer the scholarship once again to a student who provides the most outstanding response to the following question:

As the United States heads into the second decade of the new century, mired in 'The Great Recession' with unemployment at its highest levels in more than a quarter century, the middle class may be especially at risk.  Accepting this premise, please craft your response to address the following three questions.

1.      How will you, as a future business leader, ensure that your employees can maintain a standard of living similar to that enjoyed by a large segment of the middle class during the last half-century?

2.       What industry(s) will serve as the backbone of our economy in the 21st century?

3.      What policy steps might be taken to sustain the strength of the nation’s middle class workforce?

Expectations:

·         Be sure to cite any sources used. Use the format you are most comfortable with.

·         Entries are limited to 1500 words (References will NOT be counted)

·         Yaron is looking for quality entries – well researched, well thought out, and effectively written.

 Judging Process:

Wednesday, March 3rd: Entries are due in Natalia Kutzer’s e-mail inbox by midnight (12 a.m.) sharp.

Wednesday, March 3rd – Tuesday, March 16th: A panel of MBA faculty members including Dean Lewis will read and rate each of the entries based on their content. The top 3 will then be passed on to Yaron for his determination of the winner. All entries will be given to the faculty members and to Yaron anonymously.

Wednesday, March 17th: The winner will be notified and announced. The scholarship will be applied to their Spring 2010 tuition bill.

Late May, exact date TBD: Winner will be recognized at the 2010 School of Management Awards Luncheon.  Yaron will be invited to attend so that the winning student has a chance to meet and thank him in person, provided his schedule allows.

Questions may be directed to Natalia Kutzer, Alumni Career Outreach Coordinator at (518) 631-9852 or kutzern@uniongraduatecollege.edu.
